چکیده
An example of paraplegia due to hyperextension of the neck is described in which neurological and post-mortem examination demonstrated the nature and mechanism of the injury. CASE REPORT A man of sixty-three years, suffering from influenza, fainted and struck his forehead Oil a wall. \Vhen he regained consciousness about a minute later, he could not move his limbs aild had 1)araesthesiae and numbness of tile extremities. He was known to have had pain

Delayed leg paraplegia associated with hyperextension injury in patients with diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH): case report and review of the literature
Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH) is characterized by calcifications and ossification of ligaments and tendon insertions. The patients with DISH are susceptible to spinal column injury with trivial trauma due to immobilization of vertebrae and this easily leads to spinal cord injury. However, only few reports on hyperextension injuries of the thoracolumbar spine with DISH exist. H...
متن کاملA Rare Hyperextension Injury in Thoracic Spine Presenting with Delayed Paraplegia
Hyperextension injury in the thoracic spine is uncommon with only a few cases documented in the literature. The mechanism of these injuries is hyperextension combined with axial or shearing force. These types of injuries are associated with a high risk of dural tears and paraplegia. A 91-year-old female presented with acute back pain from a hyperextension injury in thoracic spine with no neurol...
متن کاملAcute injuries of the upper thoracic spine associated with paraplegia.
A review of 35 cases of acute injury of the upper thoracic spine associated with paraplegia was done. In 32, a fracture-dislocation was present; in two, there was a dislocation without associated fracture; and in one, neither fracture nor dislocation was identified. A total of 22 cases conformed to a pattern of injury consisting of anterior fracture dislocation with disruption of the intervenin...
متن کاملParaplegia in hyperextension cervical injuries with normal radiographic appearances.
This communication deals solely with a group of cases, hitherto rather obscure, in which damage to the cervical part of the spinal cord occurs without radiographic evidence of vertebral injury or displacement. Two alternative explanations of such injury have been postulated. The first is that the spinal cord pressure is due to acute massive prolapse of an intervertebral disc : but our limited e...
متن کاملDevelopment of a wheelchair headrest for rear impact protection
Evaluation of wheelchair headrests in the 1990s showed that commercially available products failed in static FMVSS 202 tests. However, those tests did not evaluate dynamic rear impact neck injury risk for wheelchair users. In this paper baseline testing of the BIORID dummy seated in a surrogate wheelchair subject to IIWPG rear impact tests is presented. Neck hyperextension was observed, and inj...
